I’ve gotten so much positive feedback on this post but some of the feedback gives me feelings. Namely the notes where people are like “I wish I had the guts to do something like that.” There were so many times I didn’t react to street harassment for so many years and so many times I still say nothing (because of safety reasons or just because I feel too sad) and times I do say something but wish I’d said more. Some people wrote that they just “let it happen.” But street harassment is so scary and every instance is different. I’d hate for anyone to think that they’re just “letting it happen.” Seriously. Fighting back feels really good and it’s cool if you can develop that like I talked about, but for right now? It doesn’t take getting in someone’s face to be a bad-ass. You DO react to street harassment, you react to it internally even if you can’t or don’t externally! Your knowledge that you don’t deserve it and didn’t ask for it (even if you are still working on that knowledge) is a mighty reaction! It is a bad-ass and strong reaction! Survival is strength. Self-care is bad-ass!
